Yesterday the heat won. Today was my revenge match, for which I was aptly prepared! As we boarded the train that morning I was stocked with cool gel strips and an arsenal of electrolyte infused water, taking sips every 10 minutes or so. This worked quite well and there were no further incidents, which was just as well, because today’s activities centred around the Singapore Botanic Gardens, being outdoors and lots of walking.

Aside from the sights you’d expect to see in a botanical garden, Jesse & I also spotted two squirrels, which excited us more than anything. This was, much to our friend Yu’s bemusement, for whom this would be a common sight. You see, we’d never seen a squirrel before. Our closest Aussie equivalent, “the possum” is much larger and commonly makes its presence known with deathly screeches so, at risk of offending the possums, they’re really just not as cute.
And what a place these squirrels have chosen live! The gardens: alive with colour, with innumerable orchids in flower and many a decorated garden path.

As could be expected, all this exploring had made us hungry! We looked to Yu, who expertly navigated us to a “hawker centre” a staple foodery of the Singaporean people. The centre bustled with activity, securing a seat required high stakes strategic negotiation and the choices were overwhelming! Thank goodness for Yu, who managed this all with ease helping us choose a classic Singaporean dish: chicken & rice.
A few more pit stops at popular spots and we bid Yu Adieu, topping off the evening with a comfortable promenade down Singapore River with the unique and twinkling skyline in sight.
