Switzerland’s most scenic train journey

We’ve got one more Swiss location on our bucket list. And even though we passed through Switzerland just a week ago, and are now in Milan, geographically a day trip from Milan to Zermatt makes sense. So why not! 

We’re not bothered by the long train ride either, in fact, rather than just being a means to an end, the soothing cool blue light of dawn along with the warm train interior, provides the perfect setting for my morning cappuccino and inspired scribbles in the travel diary.

Changing trains at Visp we embark on the Glacier Express “route”. Note here, that we are not on the world famous Glacier Express “Train” but rather the local train that takes the same route. A thrifty and fair budget alternative. Feeling pretty pleased with our travel hack, we secure ourselves a large window seat, and turn our attention to the view. A track teetering on the cusp of nature, guiding our train around perilous cliff edges, aqua streams and various other snow topped features. The sights mesmerise our minds to the point, that there is little conversation. Only watching & feeling.

After some few hours of pure scenic bliss, our train glides into Zermatt town centre, where we have an important mission to complete. That is, to find the most glamorous McDonalds in Switzerland. Luckily, Jesse’s research on the matter does not disappoint and soon we find the chalet style building with a familiar golden “M”. 

Then with two burgers down the hatch, we look to complete the second mission… Coming from Italy, we realise that Italians, though being the masters of cappuccinos, seem to hate chilled chocolate milk; Jesse’s staple snack. In the entire week prior, we searched multiple grocery stores in disbelief and disappointment. Now, back in Swiss territory, nothing could stop us from collecting a stockpile to smuggle back. And with our missions complete, we have ample time to take in the beautiful township as well.
