Exploring Singapore & the sweet delight of Kaya Toast!

It’s our first day in Singapore and given last night’s cheeky late night, very uncultured Burger King for dinner… we thought we’d start the day with a quintessentially Singaporean breakfast: Kaya Toast! What is Kaya toast, you ask? It’s an eclectic mix of toast, butter, coconut jam and egg, a perfect harmony of sweet and savoury, well worth a try.

Shout out to my friend Caro for her Kaya Toast recommendation - we wouldn’t have known without you!

Now sufficiently stuffed with toast, we head over to one of the most iconic sights of Singapore. Merlion, part lion and part fish! We’re here early and already, the site is alive with tourists happily snapping photos of Singapore’s favourite mascot, angling their hands to catch the water spouting from Merlion’s mouth.

From here we can also see the famous Marina Bay Sans, a hotel made up of three towers holding up a “boat”.

It’s stunning out here but, wow is it hot! Time to go cool off… but where? Well, if you threw a dart at the map of Singapore you’d probably land on a shopping centre, which are all ferociously air conditioned, thank goodness.

In the myriad of centres, there is a shop for everything and everyone. It’s a melting pot here, with Indian, Chinese, English, Malay, Japanese and many more influences. We were in food heaven.

Tired of being comfortable, we decided to head out into the heat again to check out Chinatown where you can find, not only every variation of Merlion keychain but also countless murals squirrelled away in a maze of buildings and alleyways. These murals depict the original “hawkers” of chinatown and provide the perfect cherry on top for an atmospheric evening.
